 Safa Önal’ın hikâyeleri bin dokuz kırk sonrası yeni hikâye anlayışının bir yansımasıdır. Bu dönemde, kentleşme olgusu ile birlikte bireyin sorunları gündeme gelir. Günlük hayatın akışı ve sıradan insanların yaşamları hikâyenin konusu olur. hikâyelerinde de çevrenin bireye etkisi iç çatışması belirgin olarak öne çıkar.
 vaka yok denecek kadar azdır. Onun hikâyelerinin kurgusal yönü, Memduh Şevket Esendal Sait Faik Abasıyanık’ın sentezi gibidir. yönüyle durum kesit hikâyelerine yönelir. İyi gözlemci olan Önal, sosyal değişimin etkisini ustalıkla işlemesini bilir. Üslûp sahibi yazar, kendi dönemi içinde Türk hikâyeciliğine renk katar. Hikâye yazarlığında olgunlaşması, onu senaryo yazarlığına taşır. çalışmada genel değerlendirilmeye çalışıldı.
